Rich Kolb: "Dad and I created the first Yardbird® in August of 1991 in Jamestown, Kentucky. Dad has spent most of his career making things from metal. The first bird came about from our talking about and tinkering with scrap materials. People instantly loved them!
Today, Yardbirds® are handcrafted in Louisville, Kentucky by me. Our menagerie of birds, critters, dogs and cats has grown from one to over hundreds. I promise to always maintain a tradition of consistently creating exciting new designs.
For me, creating Yardbirds; turns work into fun! Each Yardbird® is unique, whimsical, and
guaranteed to bring pleasure to its owner. A Yardbird® is a great conversation piece; many
people have fun identifying the parts I cleverly use to make them and they marvel at the
way the simple tilt of a head can give a sculpture so much personality.
I use mostly scrap and recycled parts to create my metal birds, critters, dogs, and cats.
I think the Yardbirds® are a great way to contribute to the good of the environment; they
are saving rejected metal parts from ending up in a landfill and they do wonders for
improving the looks of their owners homes or yards!
My medium is metal sculpture. Some of the materials I use include garden tools, car parts,
farm implements, bicycle parts, and mufflers. Numerous new designs are added to the
Yardbirds® collection every six months.
When people ask me about my creations, I smile and say, "The things in life that bring us the most joy are those which are fun and unexpected, not the mere necessities." I believe we can all benefit from a little more whimsy in our lives!
It is pretty simple: Yardbirds are really just about happiness.
